We’re excited to announce that Suchan Kinoshita’s significant work, Grensposten / Checkpoints (1993–2022), is on view at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen as part of the exhibition The stories we tell until 26 October 2025.
This work is a remarkable example of Kinoshita’s layered approach to language, space, and temporality. It reflects on systems of transition and boundaries, both physical and conceptual. The piece has a fascinating history, as Kinoshita explains:
“Grenspost (1993), for which I invited artists to occupy eighteen old customs offices between Groningen and Zeeland, which had lost their function due to the Schengen agreement, for a month. At the same time, I was invited to participate in the Exchange project in Moscow. My proposal for this was to move the customs post from Kotten-Oeding to Tretyakov Park. Tretyakov Park was a kind of dumping ground for old statues from the Soviet era. The customs post, including the border pole, was allowed to hitch a ride on a truck to Moscow along with ten thousand frozen chickens. There it was re-erected in Tretyakov Park, in the company of other dysfunctional statues.”
We are honored that this work, donated by the artist and the gallery, has been accepted into the museum’s collection.
