Biography

Tom Benson Born in 1963, (ENG) is a British artist whose practice includes painting, drawing, printmaking, bookmaking, installation and photography, drawing on the traditions of concrete art and minimalism. His work explores the relationship between viewer and image, as well as the conditions of presentation, through a focus on the interplay of optical and haptic surface qualities.

His recent work often uses an open grid structure, providing a framework for an evolving arrangement of components including samples, colors, images and exhibition documentation. This model enables a propositional and reciprocal relationship between the work and the viewer, where elements are constantly adapted and re-incorporated.

Benson’s photography, included in this exhibition, demonstrates his ongoing investigation into materiality and arrangement. Photo prints of arranged crayons and warped wire emphasize the formal qualities of seemingly mundane objects and invite viewers to reconsider their perception of the everyday.

  • HIDDE VAN SEGGELEN is pleased to announce its participation in TEFAF Maastricht, the worlds pre-eminent art fair taking place at MECC in Maastricht, the Netherlands.  After a pause of two years the fair is returning in full glory celebrating its 35 years anniversary during the last week of June.

  • Works by Tom Benson are included in the current exhibition The Garden of Colours at the PEAC Museum in Freiburg, Germany.

    The collection at PEAC, one of the most important collections in the field of radical painting in Europe, has been brought together by the late entrepreneur Paul Age.

    The exhibition will run from 22 September 2019 to 9 April 2020. Museum director Dr. Julia Galandi-Pascual will host a special guided tour of the exhibition on Monday 21 at 19.00.
