Works by Damian Taylor are included in Expanding Landscapes: Painting After Land Art at Abbot Hall, UK, opening 17 May 2025
Expanding Landscapes: Painting After Land Art brings together historical works by artists associated with the twentieth century Land Art movement, alongside contemporary artists who engage directly with landscape through painting. The show opens 17 May at Abbot Hall in Kendal, Cumbria.
The summer exhibition is the latest show of Abbot Hall’s programme seeking to engage audiences with nature and observe the relationship between people and landscape.
The exhibition follows the romantic motifs of earth, sea and sky through a variety of materials and processes. This history can be traced back to Romanticism and through important art works made in the Lake District.
Works by artists associated with Land Art, including Nancy Holt, Robert Smithson, Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Long, Michelle Stuart, Roger Ackling and Marie Yates, feature alongside contemporary works by Helene Appel, Hannah Brown, Sam Douglas, Onya McCausland, Rebecca Partridge, Katie Paterson, Damian Taylor, Fred Sorrell, Tanoa Sasraku and Jessica Warboys.
Expanding Landscapes is curated by Rebecca Partridge and Joy Sleeman in collaboration with Helen Stalker.
Artist and curator Rebecca Partridge said, “This exhibition demonstrates the many different ways in which contemporary painters continue to engage with landscape. For all these artists and their predecessors, the experience of being in the landscape is at the heart of the work. Abbot Hall, positioned between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales is the perfect location to experience this important work.”
Helen Stalker, curator commented, “Abbot Hall’s programme is centred on the exploration of People and Landscape: a timeless subject that has been a source of inspiration for generations of artists. Expanding Landscapes is an exhibition that offers a fascinating insight into how artists continue to connect with landscape through deep observation and physical engagement with nature’s elements.”
The exhibition is on view at Abbot Hall, Lakeland Arts, UK until 6 September 2025.
