The Jana Beranová Prize 2023 is awarded to Wim T. Schippers. The writer, who is also a visual artist, presenter, actor, television and programme maker, receives the prize for his pioneering literary and linguistic achievements.
The jury emphasised Schippers’ iconic quality and called the prize “tailor-made”.
The Jana Beranová Prize – instituted in 2019 by the Woordnacht Foundation and named after a living Rotterdam poet – annually awards a Dutch-language author who puts artistic freedom and integrity first, without attaching importance to appreciation on the basis of conventional, fashionable or morally accepted criteria. This is especially true of Wim T. Schippers, who over the past six decades has emphatically followed his own course, as high-profile as it is elusive.
Wim T. Schippers will receive the prize on Friday 15 December in Rotterdam in the atrium of Donner bookshop. The full jury report will be made public during this afternoon. The programme also includes a musical performance by Tom America. Earlier in the afternoon, Other Heaven will be presented, a special book project by Jana Beranová and artist Panda van der Raaf.
